Trust note
Not a government website or legal representative. Verify current central and state rules.
“International driving licence” commonly refers to an International Driving Permit (IDP). Official Parivahan guidance states that it is issued to an applicant who holds a valid Indian driving licence and is resident in India.
The permit does not replace the domestic licence and does not override the destination country’s law, visa conditions, rental contract or insurance policy.
This content is general information, not legal advice. Rules, commencement dates, state procedures and compounding amounts can change. Use the official record for any decision or proceeding.

Core Rules
Hold a valid Indian driving licence.
Provide passport, visa where applicable and travel details as requested.
Carry the valid Indian licence with the IDP.
Use it only for classes authorised by the domestic licence and recognised by the destination.

Application
Use the complete International Driving Permit application guide for Form 4A, documents and official portal steps. Apply before travel and avoid websites selling unofficial “world licences.”

Common Misunderstandings
An IDP is not a stand-alone licence.
It does not automatically allow long-term residence driving.
It is not valid merely because an unofficial card was purchased online.
Country and rental-company rules still apply.
If the Indian Licence Expires
A permit tied to an expired or invalid domestic licence may not support lawful driving. Review renew a driving licence before travel.

Frequently Asked Questions
1.Are international driving licence rules the same in every state?
Central law provides the national framework, but state rules, compounding amounts, portal workflows and enforcement practices can differ. Verify the concerned state transport and police portals.
2.Can an informational website replace official legal advice?
No. Use this guide for orientation only. For a notice, prosecution, suspension, accident, insurance dispute or court matter, rely on the official record and obtain qualified professional advice where needed.
3.Where should I verify the latest rule?
Check India Code, MoRTH, Parivahan and the concerned state transport or traffic police website. The date of the notification and the state where it applies are important.
4.Is an IDP valid everywhere?
No. Verify the destination’s legal and rental requirements.
5.Can I use only the IDP abroad?
Carry the valid Indian driving licence as well; the IDP supplements it.
6.Can a non-resident apply in India?
Official Parivahan guidance describes issuance to a resident of India holding a valid Indian licence.
